USET Sovereignty Protection Fund President Kirk Francis
Congratulates Tribal Nations Honored Today
by Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke
(Nashville, TN)— On behalf of the entire United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) and USET Sovereignty Protection Fund (USET SPF) family, we are pleased that Secretary Ryan Zinke is honoring the recent federally recognized sovereign Tribal Nations of the mid-Atlantic/southeastern region (Chickahominy Indian Tribe, Chickahominy Indian Tribe Eastern Division, Monacan Indian Nation, Nansemond Indian Tribe, Pamunkey Indian Tribe, Rappahannock Tribe, and Upper Mattaponi Tribe).
Although we have lived in the south and east since time immemorial, the Tribal Nations of these lands are far too often overlooked. Our longtime presence in this region is reflected in our cultures, traditions, languages, lifeways, and beliefs and are further interwoven into the communities across this region. As the Tribal Nations of first contact that pre-date the United States, it is fitting and just that the United States recognize these seven Tribal Nations.
On this momentous occasion, we congratulate our relatives and extend our desires that they further grow and evolve their modern-day diplomatic relationship with the United States. With unity as our founding principle, we extend our support as we collectively work together to protect and promote our inherent sovereign authorities and advocate to ensure that our federal partner fulfills its sacred trust responsibilities and obligations.
