This partner call will give clinicians an overview of clinical guidance for the new Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, which is the first COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized for use in the United States. FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the vaccine on December 11 and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is slated to provide recommendations for use December 12. The session will cover a wide range of topics, including vaccine administration, vaccination of special populations, and contraindications. Participants also will learn how to have meaningful conversations with patients and answer their questions about the new vaccine.

Many barriers exist to successful widespread distribution of COVID 19 vaccines in our Native communities. Reducing the impact of COVID 19 on Native people over the coming weeks and months will require tremendous efforts by all of us as providers, family, and community members to reduce fear and distrust of the vaccines and of health systems in general. In order to help us understand more fully the message that we need to send to our patients, families, and communities, the Association of American Indian Physicians is hosting a COVID-19 Vaccine Town Hall this Sunday, the 13th at 2:00 PM CST. We will be joined by Dr. Jill Foster, Division Director, Pediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Foster will give a brief overview of the vaccines and then answer our questions. I will be reaching out to the Indian Health Service Administration to ask if they are interested in joining us and/or sending a representative to answer questions regarding the vaccines.
Please email Tom Anderson, AAIP Executive Director at tanderson@aaip.org or Margaret Knight at mknight@aaip.org for a link to join us at 2 PM CST on Sunday, December 13th for a COVID-19 Vaccine Town Hall.

If you are unable to attend the live COCA Call, it will be available for viewing on the COCA website a few hours after the live event ends.
Monitoring vaccine safety is a vital part of the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As COVID-19 vaccines become available, the public’s knowledge and confidence in their safety, both initially and during extended use, is an important part of a successful national vaccination effort. CDC remains committed to ensuring that public health officials, healthcare providers, and the public have accurate and timely information on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.
During this COCA call, clinicians will learn how they can educate their patients about what to expect after COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, they will learn how they can play an important role in monitoring the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. This includes encouraging patients to enroll in v-safe, a new smartphone-based, after-vaccination health checker for people who receive COVID-19 vaccines, and to use v-safe to report how they’re feeling. Clinicians also will learn how to report adverse events (possible side effects) to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
