On October 18, 2022, the National NAGPRA Program announced the publication of its proposed rulemaking on the NAGPRA regulations. They have announced Tribal consultations and public listening sessions (see below). Those sessions are to take questions and comments. In addition, any written comments are to be provided on or before January 17, 2023. Information about the proposed rulemaking can be found on the NAGPRA website.

Because the proposed NAGPRA regulations are a complete overhaul of the current regulations, and provide new procedures and definitions, which are very different than current processes, it is important that Native Nations provide clear and direct input.

The Association is planning the following closed discussion sessions with you so we can all prepare for these consultations and written comments. The Association will provide draft written comments to aid Native Nations in this effort – but we need to hear your questions and concerns so we can facilitate the best outcome from this new rulemaking.
