Secretary Deb Haaland to Highlight Efforts to Combat Violence Ahead of Missing and Murdered American Indian and Alaska Native Awareness Day  

WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland will hold a press availability tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4, 2021, to discuss the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to combat violence against Indigenous peoples, a day before the commemoration of Missing and Murdered American Indian and Alaska Native Awareness Day. Secretary Haaland will be joined by Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Bryan Newland and Director of the Justice Department’s Office of Tribal Justice Tracy Toulou.

Secretary Haaland has established the cross-departmental Missing and Murdered Unit, which will provide the necessary resources and leadership to prioritize unsolved cases. The Departments of the Interior and Justice have also announced the next steps in the implementation of the Not Invisible Act to garner attention to this crisis.
