Upholding Consent as an Inherent Right to Protect Indigenous Sacred Sites

July 27, 2021 @ 6:00 pm CDT

Hosted by Native Organizers Alliance (NOA) and First Peoples Worldwide (FPW)

“There is no time to waste to protect the most sacred places where Indigenous peoples pray, gather traditional foods and medicines, get drinking water, and visit to remind themselves of the ways their ancestors lived since time began.” – Red Road to DC

Sacred sites across Indian Country continue to be desecrated by development projects that move ahead without the consent of affected Native Nations or communities. This digital rally invites all people to stand with tribal communities and Native peoples who are defending land, waters and resources from destruction and degradation. The asks: That all federal and state agencies in the U.S.:

  1. Return to the consent-based framework inherent in original treaties between nations;
  2. Recognize the traditional, legal, and inherent rights of Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples to protect sacred places; and
  3. Require the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of affected Native Nations early in the planning process and before a project is approved.

Join this webinar to learn about how we can move from consultation to being part of the decision making for tribal communities and Native peoples to exercise their democratic and inherent right to be caretakers of the land, waters, and resources from destruction and degradation.
