DESCRIPTION:Dear Tribal Leader:The Office of Assistant Secretary -Indian Affairs (IA)\, Office of Facilities\, Property and Safety Management (OFPSM)\, Division of Facility Management and Construction (DFMC)\, invites your participation in Tribal Listening Sessions as part of the effort to modernize correctional facility design guidance across IA\, specifically for the following guidelines: \n\n\n\n\nBIA Justice Detention Facilities Design Handbook\n\n\n\nBIA Justice Detention Facilities Space Criteria\n\n\n\nBIA Justice Detention Facilities Space Templates\n\n\n\n\nThe current Justice/Detention Facilities Design Handbook\, Space Criteria\, and Space Templates were last updated in 2011 and can be accessed at: https://www.bia.gov/as-ia/ofpsm/dfmc/info. Since that time\, detention operations\, building technologies\, Tribal justice system needs\, and national safety and regulatory requirements have continued to evolve. Modernizing these documents is not a routine update\, but a key step in strengthening how IA supports safe\, secure\, and operationally effective correctional facilities serving Tribal communities. \n\n\n\nWhat We Are Evaluating\n\n\n\nAs we update the existing guidance\, IA is reviewing opportunities to: \n\n\n\n\nSupport more adaptable and efficient facility layouts for Tribal justice systems requirements;\n\n\n\nStrengthen alignment with applicable national standards\, safety codes\, and regulatory requirements;\n\n\n\nImprove clarity and usability of design guidance; and\n\n\n\nProvide flexibility without compromising safety\, security\, or compliance.\n\n\n\n\nOur objective is to help ensure Tribal detention centers are safe\, code compliant\, and operationally efficient while meeting the diverse needs ofTribal justice systems. \n\n\n\nKey Questions for Listening Sessions\n\n\n\nTo help guide the modernization effort\, we ask for your insight on the following refined questions: \n\n\n\n\nWhat facility functions or spaces would benefit from greater adaptability to support Tribaloperational needs\, programmatic priorities\, or changes in population or services?\n\n\n\nWhat trends\, challenges\, or developments in your community or justice system should IAconsider when updating correctional facility design guidance?\n\n\n\nWhat are the most important factors for ensuring that correctional facilities serving Tribalcommunities remain safe\, secure\, and operationally effective?\n\n\n\nAre there specific areas where current design guidance does not fully support Tribal needs orwhere clarification or improvement would be helpful?\n\n\n\n\nListening Sessions\n\n\n\nThe DFMC will host two 1.5-hour listening sessions to hear directly from Tribal leaders andrepresentatives before beginning updates to the design guidance. SUMMARY:Effective Strategies to Interview Older Victims and Document Evidence of Elder Abuse in Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:Elder abuse is a widespread public health issue that often goes unreported due to the involvement of family members\, caregivers\, or other trusted individuals. This webinar will explore effective\, victim-centered approaches to elder abuse investigations that address the unique physical\, cognitive\, emotional\, and social needs of older adults while promoting safety\, accountability\, and healing. Participants will learn about the Elder Abuse Guide for Law Enforcement (EAGLE)\, a U.S. Department of Justice–supported initiative that provides practical strategies for interviewing older victims\, documenting evidence\, and strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration. The session will also highlight culturally responsive resources from the Native American Elder Justice Initiative (NAEJI)\, developed by the International Association for Indigenous Aging\, to support elder justice efforts in Tribal communities. \n\n\n\nThis training is available to all interested parties. There is no charge to attend this training\, and CLE will not be available.
