SUMMARY:EDA Informational Webinar about the Recompete Pilot Program
DESCRIPTION:The Recompete Pilot Program will make focused investments to spur long-term success in communities grappling with years of economic distress. As part of  the Economic Development Administration (EDA)’s place-based economic development approach\, the program intends to meet communities where they are by offering flexible grant opportunities to ensure sustainable and equitable economic growth in all pockets of a community. \nOn July 12\, 2023\, EDA will host an informational webinar for Indigenous Communities at 2:00 p.m. ET about the Recompete Pilot Program. Please register here. \nThe Phase 1 NOFO was informed by input received earlier this year in their Request for Information (RFI) and during our Tribal consultation. A high-level summary of those responses can be found here: RFI summary / Tribal consultation summary. This program builds on our belief that local community leaders—public\, private\, civic\, and labor—are best positioned to craft their own economic future. To view the Phase 1 NOFO\, FAQs and other updates\, visit our Recompete Pilot Program landing page.

SUMMARY:NAFAO Policy Webinar: What Tribes Need to Know about Bankruptcy in Light of the Supreme Court Decision in Lac du Flambeau v. Coughlin
DESCRIPTION:July 27 at 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Eastern\nRegister \nLast month\, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians v. Coughlin\, holding that Native American tribes are not immune from certain bankruptcy court proceedings\, including the automatic stay provision of the Bankruptcy Code. \nThe case involved an online payday lending operation owned by a tribal government.  When a customer sought relief in bankruptcy court\, an appellate court and the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the tribe’s claims that sovereign immunity prohibited the customer from enforcing the Bankruptcy Code’s automatic stay against it. \nOn July 27th from 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern Time\, NAFOA is proud to host a webinar. Attorneys from Navajo Nation and the law firm Sheppard Mullin will discuss what the ruling means\, what tribes should be aware of going forward\, and the impact this ruling will have on tribes going forward.  The webinar will cover: \n\nBankruptcy Basics\nBackground on Lac du Flambeau vs Coughlin\nImpact and Mitigation of the Lac du Flambeau vs Coughlin Decision
