SUMMARY:Tribal Public Health Preparedness and Resilience Task Force Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The USET Tribal Public Health Preparedness and Resilience Task Force (Tribal PHPR) is a Tribally centered epidemiological approach to public health preparedness and resilience. Its primary goal is to strengthen the resilience of Tribal Nations in the USET region through strategies focused on mitigation\, prevention\, and preparation in the disaster management cycle.  \n\n\n\nThe Task Force also builds relationships between Tribal Nations and the USET Epidemiology Team\, creating a space to share best practices\, discuss public health strategies\, and collaborate on preparedness efforts. \n\n\n\nWhen: The first Tuesday of each month at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Central/1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EasternMeetings will last 30-60 minutes\, depending on the topic. SUMMARY:Sacred Practices\, Accurate Records: Training for Death Care Professionals Working with Native American Individuals and Tribal Nations
DESCRIPTION:Inaccurate identification of Native Americans in public health and vital records creates a distorted picture of health outcomes\, leading to gaps in morbidity and mortality data that can misdirect public health initiatives at the local\, state\, and national levels. This in-person session will examine the impact of inaccurate data collection and reporting\, highlight best practices for improving the accuracy of records\, and provide insight into the lived experiences of Tribal Nations in the USET region as they navigate the challenges created by incomplete and non–Tribal Nation-specific data. \n\n\n\nWhen: September 15\, 2026. The training will take place from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Eastern\, with lunch and networking from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm Eastern. \n\n\n\nWhere: Pamunkey Cultural Resource Center\, 225 Lay Landing Road\, King William\, VA\, 23086 \n\n\n\nWho should attend: Funeral Directors\, Funeral Home Staff\, Coroners\, Medical Examiners\, Public Health Professionals\, Hospice Personnel\, other professionals involved in death investigation\, certification\, or registration\, and Tribal Leaders and public health staff. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives: Participants will: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe how inaccurate identification of Native Americans in public health and vital records affects morbidity and mortality data and influences public health decision-making.\n\n\n\nRecognize common factors that contribute to inaccurate identification of Native Americans in death records and other vital records.\n\n\n\nExplain the impact that incomplete or inaccurate data has on Tribal Nations’ ability to access resources\, inform health priorities\, and address health disparities.\n\n\n\nIdentify best practices that funeral directors\, coroners\, medical examiners\, and other partners can implement to improve the accuracy of information collected in vital records.\n\n\n\nApply strategies to support accurate and culturally respectful identification of Native American decedents\, contributing to more reliable public health data and stronger partnerships with Tribal Nations.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is open! \n\n\n\nContinuing Education (CEs): \n\n\n\n\nContinuing Medical Education will be provided.\n2.0 Credits for Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers will be provided.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:The USET Office of Tribal Public Health is hosting a Regional Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) and Dental Support Center training. The purpose of the regional training is to provide a collective approach to understanding the needs of both the diabetes and dental programs\, provide educational resources/materials to support productivity and impact. The training will be tailored to Indian Health Service (IHS) Nashville Area SDPI programs and dental clinics\, supporting efforts to strengthen sovereign Tribal public health systems and enhance capacity across the region. \n\n\n\nWhen: September 29-30\, 2026\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Eastern each day \n\n\n\nWhere: Mohegan Sun\, 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard\, Uncasville\, CT 06382 \n\n\n\nWho should attend: Indian Health Service (IHS) Nashville Area diabetes and dental staff\, Health Directors\, Healthcare professionals. Only staff members directly related to IHS Nashville Area SDPI programs and dental programs are allowed to register for this event.
