But little is known about their impact on their surrounding economies. Recent research by CICD shows how Tribally owned casinos affect nearby businesses. \nFederal contracting is a rapidly expanding source of revenue for tribes and Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) and a sustainable source of income for Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs). Recent CICD research finds that tribal enterprises\, ANCs\, and NHOs—collectively known as Native entity enterprises—regularly subcontract to non-Native small businesses. \nIn this webinar\, CICD researchers will present their findings on how gaming and federal contracting impact local businesses and economies. DESCRIPTION:July 22-23 at 9:30 am – 6:00 pm Eastern\nExam date: July 24 at 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Eastern \nRegister by July 12\, 2024\nOLE Notification Deadline: July 19\, 2024 \nThe Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)\, Office of Justice Services (OJS) issues Special Law Enforcement Commissions (SLECs) to Tribal\, federal\, state\, and local full-time certified law enforcement officers who will serve without compensation from the Federal government. This process allows BIA to obtain active assistance in the enforcement of federal criminal statutes and federal hunting and fishing regulations in Indian country. One of the criteria for receiving a SLEC is attendance at the Criminal Jurisdiction in Indian Country (CJIC) course and passage of an exam at the end of the class with a score of 70% or higher. Successful completion of this class will also satisfy one of the BIA’s criteria for tribal officers seeking to meet BIA Basic Police Officer training certification requirements. The webinar is restricted to law enforcement officers who are deemed eligible by BIA to attend. There is no cost for attending this webinar. \nParticipation is mandatory for all sessions. The online training is scheduled for July 22 and 23 from 9:30 am – 6:00 pm EDT each day. Important Note: GROUP VIEWING IS NOT PERMITTED. In order to receive credit for participation\, attendees must access this webinar training event individually on their computers/personal devices. Attendees will not receive credit for participation if they access this meeting via audio only (dialing the WebEx Webinar phone number to hear but not view the webinar). Attendees need to view the slides for each presentation. It also removed references to terms such as structurally deficient\, functionally obsolete\, and sufficiency rating. These updates aligned the TTFBP terminology for bridge conditions with the terminology used for State departments of transportation in the Federal-aid highway program. This change established a consistent terminology for classifying and referring to bridge conditions. \nEligible applicants are limited to federally recognized Tribes. Eligible uses include planning (including safety inspection of in-service bridges)\, design\, engineering\, preconstruction\, construction\, and inspection of new or replacement Tribal transportation facility (TTF) bridges\, the replacement\, rehabilitation\, seismic retrofit\, painting\, calcium magnesium acetate or sodium acetate/formate application\, sodium acetate/formate (or other environmentally acceptable\, minimally corrosive anti-icing and deicing composition)\, and implementation of any countermeasure\, including scour countermeasures\, for TTF bridges classified as in poor condition\, having a low load capacity\, or needing highway geometric improvements\, including multiple-pipe culverts. \nThe TTFBP has about $200 million each fiscal year\, FY22 thru FY26. The federal cost-share is 100 percent\, both for preliminary engineering (PE) and construction funding bridge applications. Tribal applicants are not required to provide a local match regardless of bridge ownership.

DESCRIPTION:July 25 at 12:00 pm\nRegister \nhe prosecution of stalking (stalking – a crime now covered under VAWA 2022 Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction) will be discussed by Natalie Ivey from the Stalking\, Prevention\, Awareness\, and Resource Center (SPARC)\, an Aequitas initiative and Jonathan H. Kurland\, an Attorney Advisor with AEquitas. Stalking is pervasive. Every day\, victims suffer immeasurable fear and distress over repeated\, unwanted\, and threatening conduct directed at them by their stalkers. Despite the frequency of stalking and its profound impact on victims\, offenders are rarely held accountable by the criminal justice system. In this session\, participants are challenged to adopt a new paradigm of offender behavior. By viewing an offender’s conduct against a victim through a holistic – rather than episodic – lens\, participants learn how stalking charges can provide the critical link between seemingly isolated instances. Instead of considering stalking crimes to be too complex or as an afterthought to other offenses\, participants will view these charges as key to holding offenders accountable for the full scope of their criminality. \nPresenters: \nNatalie Ivey (JD) is a Training and Criminal Justice Specialist for the Stalking\, Prevention\, Awareness\, and Resource Center (SPARC)\, an Aequitas initiative. \nJonathan H. The Listening Sessions will encompass BIA Data Governance\, BIA Open Data\, and the BIA Tract Viewer. The BIA Data Governance Team is working to inform policy making\, resource distributions\, and effective program management in advancing the support of Indian Country data needs. Recently\, the BIA developed the BIA Open Data page that contains public Geographic Information System (GIS)\, GIS data applications\, and provides Tribal Open Data in support of the Evidence Act/Open Data Act. The BIA OPEN DATA web page is the primary collaborative data resource offering a level of transparency into the BIA’s data initiatives. The BIA Tract Viewer will provide a publicly accessible view of the most requested data.

DESCRIPTION:July 25 at 2:00 pm – 3:40 pm Eastern\nRegister by July 23\, 2024 \nThe Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) provides minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children from their families and placement in foster and adoptive homes. Federal agencies such as the Departments of Interior (DOI)\, Justice (DOJ)\, and Health and Human Services (HHS) each have a role in the implementation of ICWA. This webinar is the first in a multipart series concerning the application of ICWA in State and Tribal courts. Panelists from the three federal agencies will discuss the following: (1) applicable federal regulations and guidance; (2) federal participation in federal and state court cases involving ICWA; and (3) funding and other programs from each agency which may be available to stakeholders. Additionally\, an attorney experienced in Indian child welfare matters will discuss the historical context that led to Congress enacting ICWA and the statute’s key provisions.
