The LCRI has committed federal funding to make sure that all communities have safe\, clean drinking water. USET’s Office of Environmental Resource Management (OERM) Lead Reduction Team has invited subject matter experts (SMEs) to share challenges\, accomplishments\, and the processes they are using to help them address potential lead contamination and reduce any risks by using the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 3Ts for Reducing Lead in Drinking Water in Schools and Child Care Facilities guidance. \nLead is a naturally occurring heavy metal that is globally recognized as a substance that has serious health consequences if consumed\, especially for children. Ginny is the Program Manager for both the Arizona Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program\, and the Lead Testing in Drinking Water Program for Arizona Schools and Child Care Facilities. \nHolly Thompson Duffy is an Environmental Health Science Manager with the Portland Area Indian Health Board where she manages projects focused on reducing environmental health risks in the 43 member Tribal Nations it serves. In addition to providing core environmental health services\, Holly manages the “Voluntary School and Childcare Lead Testing and Reduction Grant” which serves the 43 federally recognized tribes in WA\, ID and OR. Prior to this she served for nine years as an Environmental Protection Specialist with the Portland Area Indian Health Service\, managing an interagency agreement with the EPA to reduce the health risks of pests and pesticides by educating and empowering communities to use Integrated Pest Management (IPM). While there she also served as the technical lead on a project to collect valuable data on children’s exposures to lead\, allergens\, pesticides\, and PCBs in Tribal childcare facilities. Holly is looking forward to sharing her experiences of environmental sampling in Tribal communities! \nRosalind Ground is a citizen of the Seneca Nation of Indians located on the Allegany Territory in western New York which is at the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains. It is about 70 miles south of Buffalo and about 10 minutes from the Pennsylvania border. She is an avid Buffalo Bills fan\, Go Bills! Rosalind has 7 grown children\, 25 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She received her A.S. degree from Erie County Community College in Science Laboratory Technology. She is currently finishing her bachelor’s degree from Empire State College in Interdisciplinary Studies in Environmental Studies and plans on getting a master’s degree in environmental health. She has been working for the Seneca Nation Health System for about 7 years. The training sessions are specifically designated for elected tribal officials\, tribal employees\, tribal organizations\, and aims to empower tribal communities with the knowledge\, skills and resources necessary to assist in navigating the complexities of self-determination\, enhance governance\, and strengthen tribal sovereignty. \nThe training objectives include reviewing key policies that support P.L. 93-638 Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act\, as Amended\, the regulations\, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs policies. The Construction Contracting course will provide information and guidance on how tribal governments may design and build projects under the authority of P.L. 93-638. The Contract Support Cost (CSC) course will include a brief overview of ISDEAA. A considerable portion of the agenda is dedicated to detailed and precise examples of CSC worksheets and calculations. The Single Audit course will include information on preparation and follow-up using OMB policy and compliance supplements. \nInterested participants are invited to enroll using the training link provided and registration is on a first-come basis. Participation is accepted up to the maximum capacity\, thereafter a waitlist is maintained. A confirmation email and a meeting invitation will be provided prior to the start of each training course.\nThe Division of Self Determination understands cancellations may occur\, and we will be flexible and prepared for potential changes. WS collected around 30\,000 samples in 49 states within those flyways during the 2022/2023 surveillance season. WS has collected around to date during the 2023/2024 surveillance season. While there she also served as the technical lead on a project to collect valuable data on children’s exposures to lead\, allergens\, pesticides\, and PCBs in Tribal childcare facilities. Holly is looking forward to sharing her experiences of environmental sampling in Tribal communities! \nRosalind Ground is a citizen of the Seneca Nation of Indians located on the Allegany Territory in western New York which is at the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains. It is about 70 miles south of Buffalo and about 10 minutes from the Pennsylvania border. She is an avid Buffalo Bills fan\, Go Bills! Rosalind has 7 grown children\, 25 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She received her A.S. degree from Erie County Community College in Science Laboratory Technology. DESCRIPTION:February 20 and 21 at 2:00 pm Eastern\nRegister for one or more workshops \nNAFOA and Native Advisory are co-hosting a two-part webinar series to actively and timely prepare Tribes for the recent federal funding freeze and the related reviews of all federal spending by the Trump Administration. \nWorkshop 1: Tribal Financial Contingency Plans – Proactive & Active Steps in Crises In this one-hour Workshop\, Tribes will review a template Financial Contingency Plan and formulate their own custom plan to implement when necessary. Participants will learn proven ways to respond to financial crises and have a chance to ask questions and learn from each other. \nWorkshop 2: Tribal Funding Impact Reports – Preparing Your Messaging with Data In this one-hour Workshop\, Tribes will be given steps to produce a custom Funding Impact Report that can be used to advocate for the necessity of their Tribal federal funding. Participants will learn simple ways to use readily available data and financial information to create reports that effectively tell their stories.
