SUMMARY:Protecting Lives\, Strengthening Justice: Essential Victim‑Centered Policing for Tribal Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:Violence against Native women remains a significant public safety issue. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior- Indian Affairs Office\, more than 1.5 million American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime. Tribal law enforcement officers report persistent challenges in identifying and responding appropriately to victims\, navigating victim reluctance to come forward\, and accessing adequate victim service resources. To address these challenges\, the National Criminal Justice Training Center in partnership with the Tribal Law and Policy Institute developed the Tribal Law Enforcement Victim Services Academy. \n\n\n\nAboutThe Tribal Law Enforcement Victim Services Academy is a 16-week virtual training designed to equip new and current law enforcement officers working in Tribal communities with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to support victims of crime using a culturally grounded\, trauma-informed\, and victim-centered approach. \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain the tools and resources needed to strengthen safety\, uphold Tribal sovereignty\, and enhance justice for victims of domestic violence\, dating violence\, sexual assault\, human trafficking\, and stalking. \n\n\n\nTime commitment for the Academy is up to 2.5 hours per week. To be approved for this Academy\, you must receive approval from your supervisor for this dedicated commitment. Your approving authority information is collected during the registration process for follow-up purposes. SUMMARY:2026 Draft National Transmission​ Needs Study
DESCRIPTION:DOE recently released a draft of the 2026 National Transmission Needs Study (Needs Study) and opened a 60-day public comment period. The Needs Study report shows that there is a pressing need for additional electric transmission infrastructure due to load growth from data centers\, expanding domestic manufacturing\, large industrial loads\, and a growing economy. \nDOE is hosting a webinar specifically geared to Tribal organizations on Tuesday\, Aug. 11\, 2026\, from 1 to 2 p.m. ET. Registration is required. \nThe Needs Study identifies key national needs that can inform investments and planning decisions. DOE is inviting feedback on this draft report from local communities\, Tribal Nations\, states\, and regional reliability entities\, as well as the general public\, by opening a public comment period and hosting in-person roundtables in the summer of 2026 across the country. DOE will review comments received and incorporate them into the final study as appropriate. Direct public feedback is critical to bridge the gap between DOE’s analytical research and the dynamic\, localized energy demands currently shaping the nation’s grid. \nComments on this draft study are due Sept. 7\, 2026.

SUMMARY:2026 USET Community Resilience Roundtables
DESCRIPTION:Join the USET’s Office of Environmental Resource Management (OERM) Tribal Community Resilience Program for a series of virtual roundtable discussions on Tribal Nations’ resilience strategies\, successes\, and challenges. Each roundtable will begin with a short presentation on an environmental or community project taking place in the USET region followed by questions and open discussion for attendees to learn from one another and build community across the region. The topic of each roundtable will be announced the week before each session via social media and email. We encourage attendees to join even the sessions that may not be obviously related to their interests or duties since all facets of environmental resilience interact and discussions are enriched by diverse participants.  \n\n\n\nThese roundtables are intended exclusively for Tribal citizens and staff of Tribal Nations and Tribal organizations\, especially in the USET region\, and are not open to non-Tribal partners. To promote a comfortable and safer environment for discussion\, the roundtables will not be recorded. SUMMARY:Consultations on Interagency Implementation of ED 2027 Grantmaking Priorities and 2028 Budget Priorities
DESCRIPTION:Dear Tribal Leader\, \nThe U.S. Department of Education (ED) will conduct two Tribal Consultations on the Interagency Implementation of ED’s Fiscal Year 2027 Grantmaking Priorities and Fiscal Year 2028 Budget Priorities in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). On Thursday\, August 27\, 2026\, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. ET\, the Departments will consult on ED’s FY 2027 grantmaking priorities. On Friday\, August 28\, 2026\, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. ET\, the Departments will consult on ED’s FY 2028 Budget Request to the President. \nThe purpose of these consultations is to receive meaningful input from American Indian\, Alaska Native\, and Native Hawaiian communities to ensure that Tribal leader views inform the implementation of both topics within the current interagency framework. Each Department remains committed to upholding the federal trust responsibility as set forth in the Constitution of the United States\, Treaties\, Executive Orders\, and decisions of the U.S. Courts. Both consultations will be conducted by the Office of Indian Education (OIE) and facilitated by the Tribal Consultation Official for ED. \nBackground\nOn February 10\, 2026\, from 1:30-5:30 p.m. ET\, the U.S. Departments of Education\, Interior\, and Labor conducted consultation on the Interagency Agreements (IAAs) with elected Tribal leadership in Washington\, D.C.\, at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). The Departments heard from leadership from all corners of Indian Country\, chairmen\, governors\, principal chiefs\, and designated proxies. On June 9\, 2026\, ED published both a summary and transcript of the consultation on interagency partnerships (Final Report). The Final Report found that a majority of both written and verbal comments called for consultation to be ongoing and regionally accessible throughout implementation—not limited to a single national event. These consultations demonstrate an interagency commitment to conduct ongoing consultation. \nSince the founding of the United States\, the legal foundations and scope of each trust relationship between the federal government and Indian Tribes\, Alaska Native Villages\, and/or Native Hawaiian Organizations have been statutorily unique. There are currently 575 federally recognized Indian Tribes\, approximately 370 of which have treaties with the federal government that remain good law. Indian Tribes did not engage in treaty-making at the Department-level; they engaged in treaty-making from one Nation to another to ensure the prosperity of their descendants. SUMMARY:Tribal Public Health Preparedness and Resilience Task Force Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The USET Tribal Public Health Preparedness and Resilience Task Force (Tribal PHPR) is a Tribally centered epidemiological approach to public health preparedness and resilience. Its primary goal is to strengthen the resilience of Tribal Nations in the USET region through strategies focused on mitigation\, prevention\, and preparation in the disaster management cycle.  \n\n\n\nThe Task Force also builds relationships between Tribal Nations and the USET Epidemiology Team\, creating a space to share best practices\, discuss public health strategies\, and collaborate on preparedness efforts. \n\n\n\nWhen: The first Tuesday of each month at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Central/1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EasternMeetings will last 30-60 minutes\, depending on the topic. SUMMARY:Tribal Shared Stewardship and Mapping Areas of Tribal Importance
DESCRIPTION:What is It? \n\nDirectly Supports Tribal Sovereignty by making Tribal geospatial data sovereignty and governance a top priority.\nIncrease Tribal participation in the land management planning process on US Forest Service lands that result in prioritization of treaty\, religious\, cultural\, and subsistence interests; and the identification of opportunities for collaboration and shared stewardship.\n\nAreas of Tribal Importance \n\nAreas are to be determined soley by tribal governments (historical sites\, cultural areas\, traditional gathering areas\, endangered species\, treaty and religious use areas).\nIncorporate Tribal expertise and Indigenous knowledge into Federal land management.\nAll data remains on Tribal Government systems and is fully governed by the tribe as long as no federal monies are involved in the data creation (pursuant to the GDA).\nNTGISC is available to support tribes in building geospatial capacity necessary to create and manage their data.\nATI’s are another layer in addition to Section 106 of the NHPA because it covers more than historic properties.\nNHPA is project by project\, while ATI is on a landscape scale and allows for early engagement in planning and management.\nATI’s can be updated in near real time instead of given timelines like NHPA.\n\nUS Forest Service- Office of Tribal Relations \nThe Office of Tribal Relations within the US Forest Service serves as a single point of contact for consultation with American Indian and Alaska Native Governments. It ensures that relevant programs and policies are developed in consultation with tribal constituents and preserves Tribal sovereignty.
