Panelists will include Judge Janet Bostwick (Pima County\, AZ)\, Judge Kathleen Quigley (Pima County\, AZ)\, and Attorney General Fred Urbina (Pasqua Yaqui Tribe)\, and will be moderated by Sheldon Spotted Elk (Casey Family Programs). \n  \nThis event builds on previous ACF listening sessions on this topic. Assistant Secretary Contreras had the privilege of hearing from Tribal leaders in Minnesota\, who shared promising practices happening there. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 9th at 7:30 pm Central\nRegister \nPlease join to hear from Steven Feit\, an attorney from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). The discussion will expand on the findings of a recent report done by CEIL entitled Fossils\, Fertilizers\, and False Solutions. We will learn how fertilizers drive the exceedance of several planetary boundaries\, their deep links to fossil fuels\, and how the two industries are pursuing an aligned agenda to slow the needed climate transition. \nFertilizers and pesticides are interdependent inputs to a destructive food production model that is contributing to catastrophic biodiversity collapse\, toxic pollution\, and the violation of human rights.  \nThere is also an often-overlooked dimension of the threat posed by these agrochemicals: their fossil fuel origins. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides are fossil fuels in another form\, making them an under recognized but significant driver of the climate crisis. Moreover\, the very processes inherent in fertilizer production puts it at the center of fossil fuel industry plans to greenwash their products through carbon capture\, hydrogen\, and ammonia.

The $5 million will be an initial investment from the Permitting Council’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding with the opportunity to reevaluate the need for additional funding at a later date. \nAs the Permitting Council works to develop the criteria for transferring the funding to Tribes\, you are cordially invited to a consultation to provide feedback on the range of needs Tribal Nations have in order to engage meaningfully throughout the environmental review and authorizations process for infrastructure projects that are or may become FAST-41 infrastructure projects. The feedback given during consultation will assist the Permitting Council in developing the criteria of eligible activities and capacity building tools that can be funded. \nThe Permitting Council will send out a framing paper and an agenda for this consultation at least 30 days prior to the first consultation date. \nRegistration\nThe consultations will be held virtually on the dates below. Big Water Consulting and its partners were selected by the CDFI Fund to administer this project based on their extensive knowledge of the NMTC Program and their experience conducting trainings related to the NMTC Program for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and Community Development Entities (CDEs). \nThe next set of workshops will be held on February 22 and 23 at Embassy Suites Phoenix Downtown North. These workshops will delve into the Allocatee (CDE) and QALICB roles and how these parties can successfully utilize NMTCs in Native areas. A limited number of travel stipends will be made available to participants who require financial assistance to participate. These stipends will be provided to one person per participating organization on a first-come\, first-served basis.

The Census Bureau provided information on the feedback it is seeking in preparation for the tribal consultation focused on the Proof of Concept for the Detailed DHC-A. In that regard\, the Census Bureau is asking tribal governments to review the Proof of Concept and accompanying materials. We would like to hear from tribal nations if they will be impacted positively\, negatively\, or not at all\, if we release the Detailed DHC-A using the current specifications outlined in the Proof of Concept. Please provide the level of geography\, description of the use case(s)\, and implications should the data be released as reflected in this Proof of Concept. The purpose of the tribal consultation is to hear tribes’ recommendations.

DESCRIPTION:February 27\, 2023 at 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Eastern\nRegister \nDear Tribal Leader Letter \nConsultation Materials: Draft Department Manual (DM) Chapter on Indigenous Knowledge \nThe Department of the Interior (DOI) seeks input from Tribal Leaders\, Alaska Native Corporation Leaders\, and Native Hawaiian Community Leaders\, on the development of a policy to respect\, and equitably promote the inclusion of\, Indigenous Knowledge in the Department’s decision making\, program implementation\, and other activities. This policy will guide the Department’s Bureaus and Offices. \nAt the White House Tribal Nations Summit in November 2021\, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) issued a memorandum recognizing the importance of Indigenous Knowledge and committing to elevating its role in federal scientific and policy processes and creating an interagency working group to develop government-wide guidance. \nIn 2022\, OSTP\, CEQ\, and the White House Domestic Policy Council conducted several Tribal consultations and listening sessions\, received written comments\, and held individual meetings to gather input for the development of government-wide guidance\, which was issued on November 30\, 2022. The Department reviewed the feedback received by OSTP and CEQ and incorporated it into the attached draft Indigenous Knowledge policy. If you have already commented during the OSTP and CEQ process\, you do not need to provide duplicate comments for this consultation. \nThey are seeking input on the following: \n\nHow would you like to work with the Department to ensure that Indigenous Knowledge properly informs Departmental policies\, programs\, research\, and decision making?
