DESCRIPTION:The IHS Division of Oral Health is pleased to announce that the 2023 IHS Dental Updates Conference will take place Monday\, July 24\, 2023 through Thursday\, July 27\, 2023 at the Sheraton Grand Nashville Downtown.  Our 17-member planning committee has been busy arranging quality speakers for this biennial conference to make this the best meeting yet!  The theme of this year’s conference is “Emerging from the Pandemic.”  Please see the draft schedule (to be used to attach to travel requests) and conference information as well as the important details below. \n  \n  \nSUMMARY: This biennial conference is designed to provide IHS\, tribal\, and urban dental program staff [dentists\, dental hygienists\, dental assistants\, dental therapists] with evidence-based clinical practice continuing dental education as well as allow them to network with other oral health providers. \nAGENDA: The agenda for this meeting will be sent out via the IHS Dental Listserv\, the IHS Dental Chiefs Listserv\, the IHS Dental Hygienists Listserv\, through Area Dental Officers\, and through the Dental Support Centers. If you need instructions on how to join the listserv\, please e-mail IHSCDECoordinator@ihs.gov. Any updates to the agenda will also be sent through the listservs. \nREGISTRATION:  Pre-registration is required for this meeting so that we can accurately set up the conference plenary and breakout session rooms. Please register by July 1\, 2023. Registration includes [1] selecting this course\, [2] your supervisor approving your attendance in the CDE system\, and [3] if working in a tribal program\, submitting your tuition payment [read below].  The course number in the CDE Catalog is DE0225. \nTUITION: Tuition is required for all dental staff attending from tribal programs that have taken their IHS Headquarters dental shares. If you are unsure if that applies to you or not\, please check with your Area Dental Officer. Tuition must be paid in advance by July 1\, 2023 using the IHS Tuition Payment Form that accompanies your check to the address on the form.  Tuition is $250 per person. Attendees owing tuition will be invoiced on or about May 1st and again on or about June 1st; it is your responsibility to forward those invoices to your finance departments if necessary. Tuition receipts will be e-mailed to participants within 2 weeks after the conference ends. \nTRANSPORTATION: Attendees are encouraged to share transportation to and from the airport. Taxi/Uber/Lyft prices vary\, but generally about $30 from the Nashville International Airport to downtown Nashville [about 10 miles]. \nHOTEL: The Sheraton Grand is located in the heart of downtown Nashville\, within walking distance of more than 75 restaurants and entertainment options. DESCRIPTION:Dear Tribal Leader Letter \nJuly 25-26\, 2023\nBillings Hotel and Convention Center\n1223 Mullowney Lane\nBillings\, MT 59101\nRegister here if you plan to attend the hearing in person. \nIn October 2020\, the Not Invisible Act of 2019 was signed into law—to increase coordination in identifying and combating violent crime within Indian lands and against Indians—in response to the longstanding crises of missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP) and human trafficking (HT). \nPursuant to section 4 of the act\, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and I established the Not Invisible Act Commission (Commission)\, which consists of Federal and non-Federal members. More information on the Commission and its members can be found here. The Commission is required\, by October 2023\, to submit a final report to Congress\, the Attorney General\, and me with recommendations on how to improve intergovernmental coordination\, bolster resources\, and establish best practices for State/Tribal/Federal law enforcement to help combat this epidemic of violence. \nTo help achieve this requirement of section 4\, the Commission is holding national hearings to solicit public testimony at multiple locations to shape its final report recommendations on specific MMIP and HT topics. These hearings will provide a forum for law enforcement\, subject-matter experts\, organizations\, State/Tribal task forces\, advocates\, survivors/families\, and other stakeholders to offer testimony directly to the Commission in order to improve cross-jurisdictional communications\, increase access to resources\, and address other issues related to the MMIP and HT crises.\nPlease join the next Commission hearings—details are above. Additional dates and locations are here. \nRegistration and Hearing Information: \nCommission members will lead the public hearings to address topics specified under the act and listed above. Each hearing will include open-press segments\, as well as closed-press segments that provide privacy to participants without media being present. DESCRIPTION:July 27 at 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Eastern\nRegister \nLast month\, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians v. Coughlin\, holding that Native American tribes are not immune from certain bankruptcy court proceedings\, including the automatic stay provision of the Bankruptcy Code. \nThe case involved an online payday lending operation owned by a tribal government.  When a customer sought relief in bankruptcy court\, an appellate court and the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the tribe’s claims that sovereign immunity prohibited the customer from enforcing the Bankruptcy Code’s automatic stay against it. \nOn July 27th from 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern Time\, NAFOA is proud to host a webinar. This Guide was last updated in 2017 and is also known as the Trial Mitigation Planning Policy. FEMA’s official mitigation policy regulations are found at 44 CFR Part 201 and outline the rules for creating and updating Tribal mitigation plans. DESCRIPTION:August 2 at 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Eastern\nDear Tribal Leader Letter\nFEMA Advisory CDRZ \nFEMA will host a virtual tribal consultation on the implementation of the Community Disaster Resilience Zones Act enacted on December 20\, 2022. Senior leadership from FEMA’s Grant Programs Directorate (GPD) will lead the consultation. GPD provides grants to prepare state\, local\, tribal\, and territorial governments and first responders\, as well as non-profit organizations and port and transit system owners/operators\, to measurably improve capability and reduce the risks from manmade and natural disasters.
