DESCRIPTION:The USET Office of Environmental Resource Management is hosting a seminar that will feature engaging classroom lectures each morning\, complemented by practical field exercises in the afternoons covering vegetation sampling techniques\, soil examination\, and wetland delineation. \nParticipants will engage in an in-depth exploration of their specific wetland plants\, hydrology\, and soils\, equipping the wetland specialists for effective monitoring and assessment activities. Additionally\, participants will develop the capacity of Tribal Nations to increase the quantity and quality of wetlands by conserving and restoring wetland acreage and improving wetland condition. At the conclusion of the seminar\, students can earn a certificate of training recognized by the Society of Wetland Scientists by scoring 70% on a comprehensive exam. \nThe knowledge acquired in this seminar is intended to honor and respect Indigenous cultures within the watershed\, whose ancestors traditionally practiced stewardship\, management\, and renewal ceremonies focused on the conservation of native species and traditional resource management. Shawn brings to the Tribal Nation over 26 years of experience in Public Safety. The mission of the Safety Directors is to provide a safe and hazard-free environment for the staff and Tribal citizens of the Mi’kmaq Community. His office is responsible for writing all emergency\, disaster\, shelter\, mitigation\, and safety plans for the Tribal Nation. This webinar will be led by IHS’s Suicide Prevention expert\, Dr. Pamela End of Horn\, and National Institute of Mental Health ASQ experts\, Dr. Lisa Horowitz and Deborah Snyder. This webinar will focus on examining how the ASQ can be used and identifying the advantages and disadvantages of using the ASQ. \nSuicide has been recognized as a serious public health issue that disproportionately impacts American Indian and Alaska Native communities. To better serve at-risk populations and mitigate suicide deaths\, IHS has identified and will implement a uniform\, research-based screening tool. All IHS federal facilities will implement the Ask Suicide Screening Questions (ASQ) suicide screening tool by September 1\, 2025.

The training sessions are specifically designated for elected tribal officials\, tribal employees\, tribal organizations\, and aims to empower tribal communities with the knowledge\, skills and resources necessary to assist in navigating the complexities of self-determination\, enhance governance\, and strengthen tribal sovereignty. \nThe training objectives include reviewing key policies that support P.L. 93-638 Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act\, as Amended\, the regulations\, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs policies. The Construction Contracting course will provide information and guidance on how tribal governments may design and build projects under the authority of P.L. 93-638. The Contract Support Cost (CSC) course will include a brief overview of ISDEAA. A considerable portion of the agenda is dedicated to detailed and precise examples of CSC worksheets and calculations. The Single Audit course will include information on preparation and follow-up using OMB policy and compliance supplements. \nInterested participants are invited to enroll using the training link provided and registration is on a first-come basis. Participation is accepted up to the maximum capacity\, thereafter a waitlist is maintained. A confirmation email and a meeting invitation will be provided prior to the start of each training course.\nThe Division of Self Determination understands cancellations may occur\, and we will be flexible and prepared for potential changes. Cancellation notifications may be submitted as soon as possible or at a minimum of 48 hours in advance to allow sufficient time to offer the availability to an individual on the waitlist. \nAll training resource documents will be provided electronically\, allowing each participant the ease of access to determine whether they prefer to follow along using the electronic version or print the material at their convenience.

Our objective is to streamline operations while minimizing any potential impact on the quality of services provided to Tribes. To that end\, Indian Affairs -which includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)\, the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)\, the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration (BTFA)\, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs seeks to engage directly with federally recognized Tribes to receive formal input on critical needs as we develop plans to implement operational improvements. Indian Affairs and other agencies within the U.S. Department of the Interior (Department) remain committed to fulfilling our responsibilities efficiently and effectively.\n\nOn February 11\, 2025\, President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) 14210 establishing the “Department of Government Efficiency” Workforce Optimization Initiative\, which aims to reform the Federal workforce to maximize efficiency and productivity. Under this directive\, each agency is required to develop an Agency Reorganization Plan. SUMMARY:National Indian Country Training Initiative Online Training: Responding to Domestic Violence and Strangulation Incidents
DESCRIPTION:May 22 at 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Eastern\nRegister \nDomestic violence\, or intimate partner violence\, constitutes some of the most challenging and high risk calls that law enforcement officers will handle.  Domestic violence calls can be complex with the potential of lethality\, both to the victim\, responding officers\, and innocent bystanders.  Factors that contribute to the high-priority nature of these calls include the potential for escalation\, the presence of children and pets\, the presence of weapons\, recurring incidents\, and the potential for lethal outcomes.  Specialized training on responding to domestic violence scenarios assists officers to handle these situations more effectively and empathetically. \nThe instructor for this webinar is Joe Bianco\, a retired police officer and national expert with the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention on responding to domestic violence cases in a victim-centered manner.  The webinar will focus on determining predominant aggressor and responding to strangulation. Topics to be covered include: Understanding Trauma\, Power & Control\, & Coercive Control in Domestic Violence; the Lethality and Rage of Stranglers;  Working with Survivors and the Importance of Involving Victim Specialists Early; Basic Domestic Violence Investigations; Report Writing/Documentation; and\, Understanding Injuries and Strangulation/Medical Forensic Exams. \nThis training is for all federal\, state\, and tribal criminal justice\, social service\, and medical professionals. SUMMARY:USET OERM Virtual Trainings: Learning About Lead In Drinking Water - Elevated Lead Levels
DESCRIPTION:The USET Office of Environmental Resource Management presents\nthe Learning About Lead In Drinking Water –\nElevated Lead Levels Virtual Trainings \nUSET’s Office of Environmental Resource Management’s (OERM) Lead Reduction Team is partnering with subject matter experts to share remediation activities that address elevated lead levels in drinking water. We are aware that some Tribal Nations are unclear about elevated lead level response planning. The EPA 3Ts modules (training\, testing\, and taking action) provides guidance to remove lead from drinking water and encourages short-term and long-term remediation ensuring safe drinking water at Tribal schools\, daycares\, and other common children’s gathering places. This training will cover remediation activities from flushing to service line replacement. We encourage Tribal leaders\, health and environmental officials\, and educators to attend this training.\n\nLead is a naturally occurring heavy metal that is globally recognized as a substance that has serious health consequences if consumed\, especially for children. The adverse health effects range from lowered birth weight and slowed physical and mental development in infants\, to lowered IQ levels\, impaired hearing\, reduced attention span\, and poor classroom performance in young children. Clean and safe water is essential and paramount to building a sustainable economy\, successful educational and public health systems\, and most importantly\, a healthy and productive environment for children. He has been with MassDEP since 2019 after spending 20 years at the MA Department of Public Health. He has degrees in Environmental Science and Environmental Policy\n\nAlexander Smith-Lin is the Program Coordinator for the Mass DEP Water-Smart Program. In coordination with the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, this program offers free lead testing for schools and childcare facilities throughout the state. His duties include reviewing applications for sampling\, communicating with Public Water Systems and School Officials about results and follow-up\, and developing and implementing outreach strategies. He has been with the Program for 5 years since graduating from UMass Amherst with degrees in Marketing and Sport Management.\n\nDr. Jason R. Barrett is originally from Bobo\, MS\, a small farming community south of Clarksdale\, MS. He now resides in Starkville\, MS with his wife and four kids. Jason began his Mississippi State University Extension career as a graduate assistant in the Food and Fiber Center. Dr. Barrett went on to work for the Agricultural Economics Department as an Extension Associate and furthered his career as an Extension Instructor and then an Assistant Extension Professor with the Center for Government and Community Development (GCD). Now\, he is an Associate Extension Professor and Interim Director with the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute where he specializes in public utilities (water and wastewater)\, private well education and screening\, and leading the Mississippi Well Owner Network. He also leads the Lead Testing in Schools and Childcare Centers Program for Mississippi. Other research interests include the finance and economic development factors associated with water and wastewater utilities.\n\nKathy Rodgers is the owner of The Water Office\, LLC\, which provides water operations\, consulting and project management services in New England. In 2024 Kathy Rodgers and her team at The Water Office\, LLC completed over 100 service line inventories for public water systems in Maine\, including 4 Tribal systems. To ensure compliance was achieved with the Lead and Copper Rule Revision for Lead Service Line Inventory (LCRR LSLI)\, Kathy and her team developed outreach materials and utilized many tools to complete the inventories including: GIS mapping of service connections\, onsite digitization and review of historical records\, website publication of the LCRR LSLI results and data capture method for ongoing updates to ensure the accuracy of data. From operating to advocating\, Kathy has held a wide range of roles in the water industry since 2005. SUMMARY:NWTF’s Webinar Series to Navigate the 2025 Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance Program
DESCRIPTION:May 22 at 3:00 pm Eastern\nRegister \nMay 28 at 1:00 pm Eastern\nRegister \nJune 3 at 1:00 pm Eastern\nRegister \n\n\n\n\nOne of the most challenging aspects of effective hazardous fuel treatment is the transportation of forest products. These materials are often located far from processing facilities\, and the high costs associated with transporting these materials from national forests to forest product facilities have historically hindered the implementation of crucial wildfire prevention strategies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance program directly addresses this issue by offering incentives to offset transportation costs. By doing so\, the program aims to remove one of the significant barriers to effective hazardous fuel treatment\, thereby facilitating the broader implementation of wildfire prevention strategies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo ensure that potential applicants have a clear understanding of the program and how to apply if they are eligible\, the NWTF will host a series of informational webinars with the Forest Service for attendees to learn about the program in detail\, including eligibility requirements\, application processes and the types of projects that qualify for assistance.
