MaineCF’s People of Color Fund awards grants

ELLSWORTH & PORTLAND —The Maine Community Foundation’s People of Color Fund has awarded 16 grants that total more than $138,000. The grant program’s goal is to help people of color in Maine achieve greater equity through support for health care, leadership development, civic engagement and youth.

Grant recipients in 2018 include:

—  Aroostook Band of Micmacs, to implement a traditional culturally based artistic expression project for Micmac youth

—  Hand in Hand Mano en Mano, to build capacity within Latinx and immigrant communities of Downeast Maine to address systemic causes of racism

—   Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition, to develop programs that address leadership, racial equity, health care and transitioning for incarcerated and post-release adults and youth of color.

  • Black Arts Forum, to create a series of monthlong residencies for artists of color: $7,500
  • Community Financial Literacy, to develop a scholarship fund for asylum seekers: $8,626
  • Hand in Hand Mano en Mano, to build capacity within the Latinx and immigrant communities of Downeast Maine to address systemic causes of racism: $7,500
  • Intercultural Community Center, to support expanded technology studies for children and adults: $10,000
  • Maine Community Integration, to close cultural gaps between white teachers and students of color in eight Lewiston schools to achieve educational equity, inclusion, and academic success: $10,000
  • Maine-Wabanaki REACH, to support restorative justice practices in Wabanaki communities to cultivate empathy, community, and resilience: $10,000
  • New England Arab American Organization, to support Arabic language and culture programs for children and empowerment programs for young women to reach their full potential: $10,000
  • Somali Bantu Community of Lewiston Maine, for a startup goat farming enterprise to help meet dietary requirements of the growing Muslim, immigrant, and refugee population: $5,000
  • Tree Street Youth, to improve data and communication systems and a strategic planning process to address organizational growth: $10,000
  • In Her Presence, to improve interaction with health care providers by providing cultural competency and health equity training to immigrant and refugee women and girls. $10,000
  • Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition, to develop programs that address leadership, racial equity, health care and transitioning for incarcerated and post-release adults and youth of color: $10,000
  • New Mainers Public Health Initiative, to conduct 24 workshops about health, wellness, and nutrition for men and women and engage participants in capacity building to improve understanding, learning, and promotion: $10,000
  • Rwandese Community Association of Maine, to raise awareness of English Learning Learners (ELL) in high school about the negative impact of tobacco products and alcohol use at an early age: $10,000
  • Wabanaki Public Health, to improve and expand youth programming through staff training, youth councils, and engaging older people in program design and delivery: $7,500
  • Wabanaki Health and Wellness, to increase fiscal, technology, and staffing capacity to improve operational efficiency: $2,500
