Local schools collect 110,435 pounds of food for needy

A total of 67 local schools from Avoyelles, Grant, Natchitoches, Rapides and Vernon parishes collected 110,435 pounds of food for this year’s Christmas Cheer Food Drive sponsored by the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana and KALB-TV.

The Tunica Biloxi Indians will distribute $8,000 in prize money to the following schools, which led their parishes in donations:

  • (Avoyelles) Lafargue Elementary, 2,968 pounds and Avoyelles High, 1,958 pounds
  • (Grant) South Grant Elementary,1,595 pounds; Grant Junior High, 481 pounds; and Georgetown High, 549 pounds
  • (Natchitoches) East Natchitoches Elementary, 1,048 pounds; Cloutierville Elementary and Junior High, 1,346 pounds; and Natchitoches Central High, 2,157 pounds.
  • (Rapides) Phoenix Magnet Elementary, 13,185 pounds; Pineville Junior High, 9,478 pounds; and Alexandria Senior High, 3,718 pounds. Phoenix Magnet Elementary also took home the top prize for donating the most pounds per student (25.31 pounds per student).
  • (Vernon) Rosepine Elementary, 3,384 pounds; Leesville Junior High, 2,915 pounds; and Rosepine High, 4,511 pounds.
