Welcome Secretary Castro

Dear Colleagues:

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Secretary Julián Castro.  We have anticipated Secretary Castro’s arrival for several months and it is an honor to have him serve as our 16th Secretary.

Secretary Castro served as Mayor of the City of San Antonio where he became widely known as a national leader in urban development.  Under his leadership, the City of San Antonio launched the “Decade of Downtown,” an initiative to spark investment in the center city and older neighborhoods. Started in 2010, this effort has attracted $350 million in private sector investment, which will produce more than 2,400 housing units by the end of 2014.  In addition, San Antonio’s East Side is the only neighborhood in America that has received funding to implement major projects under three key Obama Administration revitalization initiatives: Choice Neighborhoods, Promise Neighborhoods and the Byrne Criminal Justice Program.

A Stanford University and Harvard Law School graduate, Secretary Castro has served as a member of the San Antonio City Council. Prior to that, he worked at the Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld law firm before starting his own practice.  In 2010, Secretary Castro was named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders.

President Obama remarked that Secretary Castro “is a proven leader, a champion for safe, affordable housing and strong, sustainable neighborhoods.  I know that together with the dedicated professionals at HUD, Julián will help build on the progress we’ve made battling back from the Great Recession – rebuilding our housing market, reducing homelessness among veterans, and connecting neighborhoods with good schools and good jobs that help our citizens succeed.”

As Secretary, he will focus on ensuring that HUD is a transparent, efficient and effective champion for the people we serve.  Utilizing the evidence-based management style he implemented during his time as mayor, Secretary Castro has charged the Department with the goal of giving every person, regardless of his or her station in life, new opportunities to thrive.

I welcome Secretary Castro to the HUD family and I look forward to his contributions, leadership and service to our country.
