Know Your Rights: Tribal Citizens, Law Enforcement Encounters, and Practical Steps to Stay Safe
January 28 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm CST
In response to recent concerns raised across Indian Country, NCAI and the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) will host a 60-minute “Know Your Rights” webinar followed by a 30-minute moderated Q&A using pre-screened questions. This session is grounded in NARF’s latest Know Your Rights materials and NCAI’s recent guidance for Tribal citizens and Tribal Nations.
NARF will provide clear, practical information on what to do if you are approached by ICE — in public, in your car, or at your home — including how warrants work, what identification may be requested, and steps to reduce risk and document encounters safely.
The discussion will also include a policy and government-focused framing on what Tribal Nations can do structurally, and a legal overview of jurisdictional considerations and the differences between ICE and other federal law enforcement authorities — focused on Tribal government considerations, not individual legal advice.
