USDA Forest Service Tribal Forum: Updated Tribal Action Plan

May 21 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm CDT

Honorable Tribal Leader,

You are respectfully invited to participate in a Forest Service Tribal Forum on May 21, 2026, from noon-1pm EST, regarding forthcoming updates to the agency’s Tribal Action Plan.

By now, you are likely familiar with the 2023 publication, Strengthening Tribal Consultations and Nation-to-Nation Relationships: a USDA Forest Service Action Plan. This Plan is still active and applicable and has proven as a resounding success for Tribal Relations in federal land management, providing agency guidance to fulfill federal trust and treaty commitments and support Tribal self-determination. The updated Tribal Action Plan retains the basic structure and format of the 2023 Plan; however, the original Plan requires periodic updates as it is also a living document.

Empowering agency leaders and staff to meet the many priorities that Forest Service and Tribes share in stewarding these ancestral lands, the updated Tribal Action Plan is intended as a flexible tool that incorporates new legislation and authorities, new regulatory focus, and situates the Plan within current leadership direction.

Forest Service Office of Tribal Relations will gladly accept your feedback and advisement regarding the Tribal Action Plan update until its publication, anticipated in the Summer 2026 timeframe. Please find a draft outline of the updated Tribal Action Plan attached for your reference. We look forward to hearing from you on the forum and incorporating your perspectives in the updated Tribal Action Plan.
