Returning Birth to the Community: An Indigenous Talking Circle on Birth, Culture, and Care

Join renowned Mohawk Indigenous Midwife Katsi Cook and former Tribal Chief and healthcare provider Beverly Cook for an intimate talking circle exploring the cultural, spiritual, and community-centered traditions surrounding Indigenous birth. Through storytelling, lived experience, and shared dialogue, participants will reflect on the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous families navigating pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting. This interactive session will create space to discuss the restoration of traditional birthing knowledge, the role of community in supporting families, honoring ceremony and cultural teachings, advocating for respectful maternity care, and strengthening Indigenous approaches to maternal wellness. Participants are encouraged to engage in meaningful conversation while learning from two respected Indigenous leaders whose work has transformed maternal and child health across generations.

When: August 26 at 9:00 am – 10:30 am Central/10:00 am – 11:30 am Eastern

Who should attend: Healthcare workers, All Tribal Nations, birth workers, doulas, lactation consultants, those interested in birth.

Learning objectives: Participants will:

  • Explore Indigenous perspectives on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.
  • Discuss ways to humanize public health and promote perinatal power
  • Learn how culture, ceremony, and community strengthen maternal and family wellness.
  • Discuss respectful maternity care, patient advocacy, and Indigenous birthing rights.
  • Reflect on opportunities to reclaim traditional practices and support birth as a community responsibility.
